What Is Recycling?

« Recycling is the process of re-using a given product (beyond its intended use), or producing a new product from a recyclable material. »

The term recycling is a key component of the “reduce, reuse, recycle” waste hierarchy. This approach is part of the sustainable development concept: there is a need to reduce the use of natural resources that are over-exploited, to reuse products instead of throwing them away and to recycle products that could be turned into something new. The recycling process has become a source of inspiration for eco-friendly designers who create unique pieces of design from recycled materials.

Recyclable products can be identified thanks to a logo indicating the percentage of recyclable materials within the product. Usually, plastic-based products are more difficult to recycle than paper-based products for example. But there are also many different types of recyclable materials such as glass, textiles, electronics etc. Recycling is also a way to give a new life to old and expired items by transforming them into design products.

A recyclable material is usually used to produce the same kind of material (used office paper becomes new office paper) but sometimes this process is too expensive or too difficult. In this case, recyclable materials are reused to produce other materials. Recycling also gathers other disciplines such as the salvage of certain materials for some complex products (car batteries, hazardous materials etc.).

Recycling has been widely promoted in order to make people sensitive to the importance of recycling to preserve the environment. Legislation has been used to increase the demand and use of recycled materials and to encourage people to recycle their waste.

Recycling steps:

  1. Collecting
  2. Sorting

Materials are sorted in order to put the same types of materials together before being recycled. Then, products are again sorted according to their weight, colour, composition…

  1. Recycling

Recycling allow to transform an old product into a brand new one. This is how we can buy pencils made from old plastic cups or kitchenware made from food waste. Recycled products are now part of our daily life and play a key role in the design world. Moorbi.com is always looking for the most creative and sustainable creations promoting recycled products, because we care about the environment and about the products life-cycle.
